The Power of Play
Members of the LoNyLa London and LA hubs plunged into playful experimentation mode on Sunday night, November 13th. We had multiple laptops on hand, which allowed us to stream multiple characters on multiple players on one screen.
We improvised a dramatic situation in which each character had to solve the same problem. Because we can hear each other between the players, it’s as if the actors in London and LA were in the same room. The barriers of geography and time disintegrated in a blink.
In theory, the broadcasting platform can handle dozens of simultaneous video streams on multiple players. The number of players is limited only to the space on a computer screen. Depending on their broadband connection, actors from disparate regions around the world can pop in and out of this checkerboard story.
Do we watch each character solve the problem in his or her idiosyncratic way? Or do we watch the characters come together – as in a lifeboat or a stranded elevator conundrum – to solve a common problem? Will there be an ad hoc synchronized and shared response?
LoNyLa artists are sniffing at head cameras as our next experiment. If we enable actors to move with the camera and juxtapose different points of view on screen, what kind of narrative will unfold?
On-the-fly experimentation sparks new ideas and insights. We need to break out of the mindset of traditional content development processes. Improvise. Remain fluid and open to new concepts. Become the beginner again and again. Only then can we discover novel ways of telling stories. –J Dakota Powell
