About CultureHub

CultureHub LogoCultureHub is an incubator for creativity that connects artists from diverse disciplines and cultures by providing networked environments in which to collaborate, experiment, and explore.

CultureHub builds local and global communities through open space for creative research, artistic exchange, and education. The creators at CultureHub explore art and technology as a means for developing new forms of expression, sharing creative experiences, and promoting new methodologies for global collaboration.

Founded in 2009 by the Seoul Institute of the Arts in Korea, and La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City, CultureHub is a recipient of the NEA Arts in Media Award and currently has four key telepresence partners: 1. Seoul Institute of the Arts (Seoul, Korea) 2. La MaMa Experimental Theater Club (New York City, USA) 3. CalArts (Los Angeles, USA) 4. Contact (Manchester, UK).

In addition, CultureHub is in ongoing collaboration with Ashe Cultural Arts Center (New Orleans, USA), Hip Hop Re:education Project (New York City, USA), La MaMa Spoleto Open (The Official Fringe of the Spoleto Festival, Italy), and El Colegio Del Cuerpo (Cartagena, Colombia).

He has performed with many notable artists including: Yoshiko Chuma, The Bread and Puppet Theater, Maureen Fleming and Theodora Skipitares. He has been a member of the Great Jones Repertory Company since 1996 and has danced in Tamar Rogoff’s Company as well as in two of Min Tanaka’s World Premiers, ROMANCE and FIRE STORY. Billy is a founding member of the Brooklyn-based performance ensemble Morgon Kara and has directed three of their productions: FALL (Morgan Kara’s first multi-media piece), EGYPT PROJECT (commissioned by the Brooklyn Museum of Art) and BIRDMAN (a site-specific piece funded by Dancing in the Streets). Billy also creates, choreographs and directs his own multi-media performance projects. His last theatrical work, PLACE POEMS using dance, text, video and a live original score, was presented at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre. Billy lead CultureHub’s multi-media production for John Jesurun’s STOPPED BRIDGE OF DREAMS and collaborated with Annie B Parsons of Big Dance Theatre on a video installation for La MaMa Moves Dance Festival which captured simultaneously live feeds of dancers in the UK, Korea, Bulgaria and Lebanon. He is an acting professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and has been a guest lecturer at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, NYU Gallatin and Sara Lawrence. His current focus is exploring telepresence and consumer based technologies as a medium for multi-location art and collaboration.
