LoNyLa

Broadcasting Workshops & Industry Panel

Four 2-hour broadcasting workshops – two in London and two in New York City – will provide hands-on instruction on broadcasting works-in-progress over the web. Participants will become familiar with the required equipment (camera setup, cable hookup, etc.), how to use a broadcast platform and recording media for later viewing. LoNyLa members are encouraged to sign up!

BroadcastingBroadcast platforms on the web can function like TV studios. The software enables users to switch multiple video streams in real time, create storyboards with recorded media and add overlays, tickers and branding to a live broadcast.

With the recent introduction of affordable HD video encoders, broadcasters can stream in HD over the web. A TV broadcast-quality video feed is achievable online. To a great extent, performance depends on the quality of the broadband connection.

LoNyLa aims to empower artists to develop as well as to market their projects by using robust broadcasting applications. Learning how to work with these tools is akin to learning a new language. You have to roll up your sleeves and do it – broadcast! Repetitive use helps users to grow comfortable with the technology.

Broadcasting over the webParticipants will also explore various approaches on staging a project for an online broadcast as well as experiment with a multiple camera shoot.

There are ways to stage a rehearsed reading before a camera that illuminates the narrative flow of the material. Camera techniques used in film and television can be used to bring a stage play (still in progress) to life.

Broadcasting Workshops in London and New York City will be paired. Because they occur simultaneously, artists in both cities can test the video stream and how it appears to remote audiences. The first set of the workshops will be scheduled in late October and the second set in late November. LoNyLa artists who have become adept at broadcasting online will conduct the workshops. Exact dates TBA.

Producers Panel

A panel on producing for stage, film and TV will draw first upon Velocity Lab advisers – accomplished producers spanning the various mediums – who can provide artists with insights on the producing process, common hurdles and current trends.

Artists and audiences can get a peek into the trials and travails involved in the script development cycle and production. How do producers select projects in which to invest their time and resources? What are the pitfalls that can derail a production? What are the prevailing trends in terms of financing and distribution in the various mediums? How do you market projects in environments saturated with media?

Industry expertise is invaluable. By sharing knowledge as well as personal anecdotes, producers can enlighten artists and audiences as to what goes on behind the camera.

LoNyLa will use videoconferencing tools to stream in remote panel participants. The Producers Panel will take place in early November. Speakers and exact date TBA.
