Industry panels will expose theatre practitioners and audiences to concepts, such as the use of sensors and/or software, relevant to the performing arts. Video conferencing will enable remote experts to participate.

"Stretching Time and Space: Using Technology in Live Performance"


Description: Why, when and how to use technology in theatre? What are the questions that theatre practitioners ask when they envision the development process or the creation of new work? In this lively panel, we will probe into Elyse Singer's "Frequency Hopping"the experiences of TimeWave artists who have employed various technologies (e.g., Skype, Ustream/Watershed, Polycom, Kinect, Isadora, MIDI) to achieve interactivity, virtual presence and other objectives in the pursuit of a vision. Given that some of the speakers have been working with multimedia for 20 years, we will discuss how the use of technology has evolved over time.

Panel speakers are as follows:

John Gould Rubin, Founder of the Private Theater (NYC) - On the use of Skype rehearsals for PEER GYNT (Ibsen Festival in Oslo Norway, summer of 2012).

Dr. Peter S Petralia (Manchester) - On using Skype for dance projects as a dramaturge, with the perspective of having worked on one of the first dance projects with Mabou Mines in 1994-5.

Elyse Singer, Founder of the Hourglass Group (NYC) - On the historical use of interactive multimedia, dating back to the staging of PRIVATE PROPERTY in 1992.

Teoma Naccarato, Founder of Naccarato Dance (Montreal) - On the intersection of physical expression with video, sound, lighting and interactive technologies.

Baba Israel, Artistic Director, Contact (Manchester) - On the use of technology to achieve telepresence in dance and drama.


Kathryn Velvel Jones, CEO, VirtualOvationTV (NYC) - On using technology to turn the performing arts into an interactive global event which actively builds, engages and incorporates a worldwide community.

Sheldon Smith/Lisa Wymore, Co-Artistic Directors of Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts (Berkeley, CA) - On learning to love the glitches - how a certain amount of uncertainty can enhance the "liveness" of technologically augmented live performance.

"Creating Art: Using the Web as a Canvas"


Description: “Hollywood has the Oscars, Broadway has the Tonys, Now Twitter has the…Shorty Awards?” (New York Times, Dec. 15, 2008). Short videos, Tweets, condensed, pungent blogs – all are short forms of content that galvanize creative expression, direct communication and social interaction on the web. When this content goes viral, it can set the agenda for pop culture. Why do some videos go viral on YouTube? What types of content evoke massive user response – i.e. resonate to the degree that millions of people worldwide hit the “like” button? In this panel, we will explore the experiences – the before, during and after – of social media creators with content that’s gone viral.

Panel speakers are as follows:

Jenni Powell, Head of Content for Vidcon, the world's largest online video conference. Jenni has been deeply involved in innovative online communities for several years, dating back to the cult internet series Nobody’s Watching (over 40M views) and later becoming a central figure in the web video breakout lonelygirl15 fan community, eventually landing a job at lonelygirl15’s production company EQAL. Jenni has worked on many popular web series such as the smash Microsoft-sponsored hit The Guild, Streamy Award-nominated With the Angels, Poor Paul, The Crew and Comedy Central’s Atom.com standout The Legend of Neil. She has written for popular web entertainment site Tubefilter News and consults on and produces various transmedia entertainment projects around Web, such as the ghost-hunting comedy Bumps in the Night, the No Mimes Media 10 minute transmedia experience Webishades, and the Atom.com series Video Game Reunion. She was the Staff Producer for DeFranco Inc., which included producing the sci-fi/horror anthology BlackBoxTV and was the Digital Content Coordinator at Relativity Media / Rogue Pictures.

Daryn Strauss, Writer/director/producer/co-star of the critically acclaimed online dramedy series "Downsized." Daryn Strauss’s unique voice has been praised by the Los Angeles Times, Fast Company, Bostinnovation, NewTeeVee, Tubefilter, Boston Globe, Clicker, and Daytime Confidential. Recently named an Official Nominee for a Writers Guild Award in Writing Original New Media for Season 2 of Downsized.

Susan Miller, Executive Producer/writer of the critically acclaimed Indie series, Anyone But Me, which won an Official Webby nomination in Drama, TV.com’s Best Web Drama, Clicker’s Best Web Drama, The Silver People’s Telly Award, a Streamy, and the IAWTV Best Writing award. For her work on Anyone But Me, Miller and creative partner Tina Cesa Ward won the first Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Achievement in Original New Media.

Mike Bonifer is the co-founder and CEO of GameChangers which uses game design to help teams and organizations communicate, collaborate and innovate. He is the author of "GameChangers – Improvisation for Business in the Networked World," the foundational text for his company’s work. Beginning with his role as the publicist on the motion picture "Tron," through his pioneering work in cable television (The Disney Channel), digital video (Betacam), web design ("Toy Story"), and streaming media ("Live Earth"), Bonifer has helped shape the way we use technology to tell and share stories. Moderator: Pun Bandhu, LoNyLa Advisor. Trained at the Yale School of Drama, Pun has appeared in films, TV and on stages across the US. Originating roles in over 50 world premieres, Pun has a special affinity for new work. He recently received the Colorado Theatre Guild’s 2010 Henry Award for Best Supporting Actor. As a producer, Pun’s company, ZenDog Productions, produced Glengarry Glen Ross (Tony Award Best Play Revival 2005) and Spring Awakening (Tony Award Best Musical 2007) and was an associate producer on the Olivier-nominated revival of Fiddler on the Roof on the West End.
